Founders

Luxmhina L.
Founder/ President
I founded UNLEASH because of my personal experiences growing up in the Jane and Finch community. Transitioning from high school to university, I recognized many areas of improvement for marginalized students with an interest in healthcare and medicine. I strongly believe that individuals experiencing adversity have a range of life experiences and resilience that will allow them to represent a broader range of minority populations. Through this organization, I hope to improve community health and create opportunities for students.

Mathura C.
Founder/ Vice-President
As someone who grew up in a marginalized community, I’ve seen firsthand the challenges students face as they pursue higher education. UNLEASH hopes to encourage youth in underprivileged neighbourhoods and guide them toward a career in healthcare and I am glad to be apart of such an organization and offer my support.

Through UNLEASH I wish to help make a change in the current inequity that prospective medical students face due to their economic status. I hope to see students from all backgrounds have the same access to medical school. I would also like to see a rise in the entry rates of students who come from lower socioeconomic backgrounds.

Marie D.
Treasurer
As a first generation university student I have faced many obstacles in my journey. But with UNLEASH I hope to help others get access to resources and opportunities for them to succeed in their journey.

Areebah
Secretary
My name is Areebah and I joined UNLEASH because I believe that everyone should have access to resources that will make them successful in the field of medicine, regardless of socioeconomic status. As a university student myself, I can sometimes find it hard to navigate through the influx of information regarding a career in medicine and UNLEASH works to help all students understand everything they need to become successful in this career path. I look forward to working with UNLEASH to provide equality of opportunity for all.

Mini M.
Public Outreach Officer
My name is Mini Makki and I’m currently studying Human Biology, Anthropology, and Psychology at the University of Toronto. As someone passionate about medicine and the health field, I understand the various challenges and barriers associated with pursuing medicine. UNLEASH advocates for those who have different obstacles in their path and works to get everyone an equal opportunity.
I am currently pursuing my undergraduate degree in BSc Honours Kinesiology and Health Science. As a student in the healthcare field, I know how difficult it can be to enter the medical field because of the variety of structural barriers. It can be hard to think about medical school if you don’t have the necessary resources to succeed. I would like to help low-income families and communities get equal opportunities in pursuing careers in the medical field.

Osama S.
Public Outreach Officer
Growing up in a marginalized community, I saw many cases where students pursuing higher education, especially those wishing to apply to medical school, did not have access to the same resources and opportunities that students from other communities had. I hope to uplift those wishing to pursue medicine but either cannot afford to do so, or are not well informed, while also potentially opening a new career path for those who had not considered medicine before.

Janani R.
Public Outreach Officer
Growing up with the aim of studying medicine, I recognized and witnessed the challenges faced by many individuals in low-income and marginalized communities as they tried to pursue an education in medicine. UNLEASH intends to support individuals pursuing a career in medicine by mitigating structural barriers, ultimately promoting equity and diversity in the healthcare field. Being a member of this organization allows me to support individuals in underprivileged communities and I am glad to be involved in such an organization.

Growing up all I wanted was a chance to be in the medical field. Currently I’m studying in Honours Kinesiology BSc, but this road has not been easy. Facing obstacles at all stages in my life from school to family life has created a difficult journey to say the least. But at UNLEASH, they believe in having an equal opportunity, and it’s this opportunity that can make a world of a difference.

I am a nursing student with a passion to strive for equity in healthcare for all individuals. As a visible minority myself, I have a great interest in promoting representation of individuals from different backgrounds in the field of medicine. I joined this team with the intent to advocate for individuals who face barriers entering this field such as race, socioeconomic status, and sexual orientation.

UNLEASH is a remarkable initiative that works to remove the obstacles that prevent marginalized communities from entering the healthcare industry. I am delighted to be a member of an organization that works to ensure that everyone has equal access to education. I am excited to make a change!

Dante H.
I am a soon to be first year management student at the University of Toronto. I hope to complete my four year undergrad and finish my studies by earning my MBA at Rotman school of management. From there I’ll pursue a career in finance. In my spare time I like to read up on current world events, spend time in nature, listen to music, play instruments and play video games. I’ve joined UNLEASH in hopes of gaining more business experience as well as contributing to my personal ambitions in being an activist for the underprivileged. It is a firm conviction of mine that it is everyone’s right to pursue their passion and to that end I want to help as many people as possible achieve their ambitions.

Through UNLEASH, I am proud to be a part of an organization that supports and contributes to eliminate the barriers faced within the medical field and socioeconomic disparities. I hope to see our micro-level efforts create structural change where students from all backgrounds are able to have the same access to healthcare opportunities.

There are so many brilliant, driven, and capable students coming out of schools today that want to aid their communities and make a difference. But the education system is flawed and I’ve witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by many individuals in low income communities to simply study and pursue a career in what they love. UNLEASH looks to right these wrongs and support these students by giving them opportunities to succeed on their journey, and trying to level the playing field. I’m excited for all the great things UNLEASH will do in the future, and am proud to be a part of an organization that looks to support students in underprivileged communities and offer them equal opportunity to pave their own path.
